In this part of the country, the natural contrasts are becoming more apparent. The region extends from the fantastic ocean coastline with its picturesque fishing villages and local restaurants with excellent cuisine, to the Roman city Coimbra and mountain chain of Serra da Estrela.
The central Portugal is full of mountain rivers with key sources, glacial lakes and picturesque valleys. Here one will be impressed by the firmness of ancient traditions and hospitality of the locals. You should also taste famous local cheeses, sausages and mountain honey!
The city of Aveiro with all its channels is a great place for a river walk on a painted boat. Majestic Kuimbra with its first university in Portugal and a unique Baroque library is one of the oldest cities in Portugal.
Guarda and Viseu, where stone architecture is still dominating, strongly contrast the ease of the coast.
Canoeing, rafting, rock climbing, rappelling, paragliding and many other outdoor activities are popular in Central Portugal due to favourable conditions and picturesque nature.
On the rocky slopes of the Serra da Estrela, small villages huddle together, framed by fields and chestnut groves like an oasis in the midst of a dull landscape of pastures and scarce bald plateaus above them. This region is now the only place in Portugal where you can practice skiing. However, local hotels are ready to receive guests interested in hiking and fishing in summer as well.
Natural pools and reserves of Serra daLousâ, Serra do Açor and Serra do Caramulo complement the landscape of central Portugal.
